چکیده

We investigate terrestrial water storage (TWS) changes over the Sichuan Basin and the related impacts of water variations in the adjacent basins from GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), in situ river level, and precipitation data. Although GRACE shows water increased over the Sichuan Basin from January 2003 to February 2015, two heavy droughts in 2006 and 2011 have resulted in significant water deficits. Correlations of 0.74 and 0.56 were found between TWS and mean river level/precipitation within the Sichuan Basin, respectively, indicating that the Sichuan Basin TWS is influenced by both of the local rainfall and water recharge from the adjacent rivers. Moreover, water sources from the neighboring basins showed different impacts on water deficits observed by GRACE during the two severe droughts in the region. This provides valuable information for regional water management in response to serious dry conditions. Additionally, the Sichuan Basin TWS is shown to be influenced more by the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) than the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), especially for the January 2003–July 2012 period with a correlation of ́0.66. However, a strong positive correlation of 0.84 was found between TWS and ENSO after August 2012, which is a puzzle that needs further investigation. This study shows that the combination of other hydrological variables can provide beneficial applications of GRACE in inter-basin areas.

Wavelet analysis of GRACE K-band range rate measurements related to Urmia Basin

Space-borne gravity data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), as well as some other in situ and remotely sensed satellite data have been used to determine water storage changes in Lake Urmia Basin (Iran). As usual, the GRACE products are derived from precise inter-satellite range rate measurements converted to different formats such as spherical harmonic coefficients and equiva...

Statistical downscaling of GRACE gravity satellite-derived groundwater level data

With the continued threat from climate change, population growth and followed by increasing water demand, the need for hydrological data with high spatial resolution and proper time coverage to be felt more than ago. Therefore, having data such as terrestrial water storage changes and groundwater level changes with high resolution spatial helps to plan and make decisions for water resource mana...

Investigation on Environmental Factors Influencing Water Erosion (case study:Taleghan basin, Varkesh subbasin)

The purpose of current study is to investigate the effects of some of environmental factors on erosion value, to find the most important governing factors and the relation between erosion of working units and environmental factors (soil characteristics, slope, aspect, elevation, lithology, geomorphology faces and vegetation cover percentage). Working units map was prepared using geomorphology...

Characteristic mega-basin water storage behavior using GRACE

[1] A long-standing challenge for hydrologists has been a lack of observational data on global-scale basin hydrological behavior. With observations from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, hydrologists are now able to study terrestrial water storage for large river basins (>200,000 km2), with monthly time resolution. Here we provide results of a time series model of ...

Comparison of GRACE with in situ hydrological measurement data shows storage depletion in Hai River basin, Northern China

Water storage change has implications not only for the hydrological cycle, but also for sustainable water resource management in especially semi-arid river basins. Satellite/remote sensing techniques have gained increasing application in monitoring basin and regional hydrological processes in recent decades. In this study, the latest version of GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) is...
